Our Helping Hands Center is in need of Helping Hands
who will volunteer at the center on a regular basis. For more information on how you can help, please contact the church office at 478-7023 or the center at 472-2298. This is a great opportunity for members who are retired or have some free mornings during the week and weekends.

Mission Statement

Our mission is not to offer handouts, but rather a hand up. We believe that with this hand up, the Lord will get you out of your dilemma.

Olivet's Helping Hands ministry is driven with a sense of gratitude, accountability and is painfully aware of the fact that Jesus said "the less fortunate will always be with you." Through our giving, we offer Christ to you (Mark 14:7; Matthew 25:35-40.)

Every other Wednesday in each month, the compassionate volunteers arrive at the Olivet Helping Hands Center and begin to pack grocery bags of nutritional food and/or place new or gently-used clothing on the garment racks for those in need. The center not only serves persons living in Austin but outlying areas as well. Like most food pantries and clothes closets, one does not have to live in a certain zip code to receive services from the center. The Olivet HHC was organized by Pastor Kennedy Young, Sr., in August 1995 fueled "by word of mouth" and signage in various neighborhoods. The result was over 350 youth received clothing, shoes and school supplies. The center sponsors two (2) annual events: Back to School Clothing and Backpack Giveaway (August) and The Harvest of Hope Coat, Sweater and Blanket Giveaway including worship service at Olivet Baptist Church followed by a pre-Thanksgiving Dinner which is called Community Fellowship Dinner (November) this two day celebration involves the entire community. Our homeless brothers and sisters are our special guest. Beginning in 2006, the center has added a third (3rd) event "The Princess Project" (March-April.) This project provides prom dresses, shoes and jewelry for high school girls (11th and 12th grades), whose parents or guardian meet proverty guidelines.

The success of the Olivet Helping Hands Center is solely reliant on the support of the Olivet Baptist Church family, its volunteers, friends and neighbors, local and national corporations.
